The purpose of this study guide and the accompanying video is to provide guidance to the perioperative team for the safe use of energy-generating devices. This learning activity will focus on safety precautions that should be implemented whenever devices that deliver energy in the form of radio-frequency electrical current, ultrasound, or laser are used. These devices can cause significant injury if mishandled, and minimizing the risk of injuries will improve patient outcomes.

After completing this study guide and viewing the video, the perioperative registered nurse (RN) or interested health care provider should be able to:

• Describe the safety precautions common to all energy-generating devices
• Apply additional safety precautions when the plan of care includes the use of electrosurgical units, lasers, or phacoemulsification devices
• Implement appropriate precautions for patients with implanted electronic devices
• Minimize the risk for injury during minimally invasive surgery
