Resection of the medial head of the clavicle is a rapid, extrathoracic approach to the subclavian artery in the hemodynamically stable trauma patient. The technique can be easily learned and is applicable to both right and left-sided injuries. This approach allows access to the subclavian artery, does not violate the pleural space and is associated with minimal morbidity. Using a cadaver dissection, we will define the approach to the subclavian artery using a clavicular head resection. Important features of the dissection will be shown using a cadaver dissection, and further delineated in footage from the operating room. The final section of the film uses an actual patient case where clavicular head resection would be appropriate. This procedure is recommended as an approach in hemodynamically stable patients with distal subclavian injuries.
