The centrifugal pump represents a major technologic advance: the ability to achieve partial left heart bypass without systemic anticoagulation. This technique virtually eliminates the risk of paraplegia, avoids physiologic overload of the left ventricle, and prevents splanchnic and lower torso ischemia/reperfusion in high-risk multisystem-injured patients.
