The ideal treatment of benign tumors of the pancreatic neck and body is a limited resection. This operation avoids the spleen removal, preserving the functional exocrine and endocrine tissue.
This 55 years old female was referred to our unit because us and ct scan findings of a 2 cm nodule of pancreatic neck. The morphology of the cyst (unilocular) was indicative of mucinous ethiology. This kind of tumor has a malignant potential that advises resection. A middle segment pancreatectomy with gastropancreatic anastomosis was planned.
All the dissection was performed with the Da Vinci Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical Inc,USA); the middle segment was resected and a robotic gastropancreatic anastomosis was performed. The specimen was retrieved through the umbilical port. No blood transfusion was required.the operative time was 240 minutes.
The post operative period was uneventful. The patient was discharged after 8 days in good general conditions. Histological findings confirmed the diagnosis of mucinous cystadenoma of the pancreas.
