Pancreatic cancer often produces small metastases to liver or peritoneal surfaces. While their detection is important for planning optimal therapy, CT scanning and angiography are frequently unable to demonstrate them. Laparoscopic examination uniquely provides an accurate assessment of intra-abdominal metastases, confirmed both by biopsy and cytologic exam of peritoneal washings.
