We, the Potsdam Lipedema Research Group, are a group of physicians in Potsdam, Germany with a primary interest in the treatment of lipedema. Lipedema is a chronic, progressive and painful disease of disproportionate fat tissue accumulation of the lower and upper extremities, affecting according to some estimates up to 10% of adult women in western countries. Lipedema and its surgical therapy is currently a very intensely debated subject in Germany. The GBA, that is the Federal Joint Committee in Germany, has announced that beginning from the 1st of January 2020, the costs of liposuction in lipedema stage 3 patients will be covered from the patient's state-mandated medical insurance. There will also be a randomized, controlled multicentric study comparing conservative to surgical treatment of lipedema to shed more light on the benefits of liposuction as a treatment modality in lipedema patients On this premise, we have produced a video presenting our strategy in the multi-stage surgical therapy of lipedema, as well as discuss a retrospective analysis of our data of the past 10 years. We believe that, in order to improve diagnosis and ultimately treatment of lipedema for each patient, exchange of knowledge and technical know-how is essential. We feel that our video presentation best presents our concept in the surgical treatment of lipedema, as well as give an overview of our research findings.
