Splenectomy can permanently increase susceptibility to infections. For this reason a trend away from splenectomy and toward splenic conservation has emerged. In patients which require a laparotomy with higher degree splenic laceration the preservation of the organ can be achieved using an absorbable mesh as demonstrated in the first case. If one pole or a half of the spleen is injured a partial resection with staplers is an appropriate, quick and safe method, as shown in the second case.
