Fibrotic esophageal strictures may require resection. Another option, currently under utilized, is self dilation. A patient performs self dilation and provided instruction useful for patients or physicians unfamiliar with the procedure. In appropriate settings this technique results in safe preservation of the esophagus and restoration of near normal swallowing.
