Surgical treatment of Zenker's diverticulum has consisted of cricopharyngeal myotomy with diverticulum suspension or resection. An alternative approach is depicted by this video. Under general anesthesia, a specialized diverticulascope is positioned to expose both the diverticulum and the esophagus. An endo-GIA stapler is utilized to staple and divide the common septum. This eliminates the functional obstruction by the cricopharyngeus and creates a common cavity between diverticulum and esophagus.
