Sigmoid diverticulitis is a benign disease demanding a limited resection and offering a good indication for a laparoscopic approach. This procedure is carried out in four steps: 1) vascular ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery; 2) division of the rectum; 3) mobilization of the left colon; and, 4) anastomosis. The minimally invasive approach to sigmoid resection for diverticulitis is safe and feasible, with a median hospital stay of four days.
