The purpose of this video is to introduce an office or bedside method of evaluating both the motor and sensory components of swallowing called Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing or FEESST. FEESST combines the established endoscopic evaluation of swallowing with a technique that determines laryngopharyngeal sensory discrimination thresholds by endoscopically delivering air pulse stimuli to the mucosa innervated by the superior laryngeal nerve. Contained in this program is a detailed endoscopic view of laryngopharyngeal anatomy, laryngopharyngeal sensory discrimination testing with two endoscopes in the laryngopharynx so that it appears as if a tiny camera is attached to the endoscope during the examination, various behavioral maneuvers (head turn right and head turn left) while the patient is being fed food that has green food coloring mixed in, as well as demonstrations of spillage, aspiration and reflux.
