Laparoscopic colonic surgery has not developed at the same rate as other procedures because of the requirement for advanced laparoscopic surgical skills, deficiencies in instrumentation and concerns about the potential risks of laparoscopic surgery for neoplasia. Although the colon is a retroperitoneal structure, most description of colonic mobilization, whether laparoscopic or open colectomy, is through a transperitoneal access. In this video we demonstrate a retroperitoneal approach in colonic mobilization using specially designed balloons.
