A 36 year old female patient ingested hydrochloric acid in a suicide attempt, attributable to schizophrenia. X-ray examination and endoscopy revealed stenosis from the middle thoracic esophagus to the pylorus. Two months after ingestion, the patient underwent transhiatal esophagectomy without thoracotomy, total gastrectomy, and esophageal reconstruction. The substitute esophagus was made from the ascending and transverse colon with the left colic artery as a vascular pedicle. The colon segment was interposed between the cervical esophagus and the duodenum through the posterior mediastinal route.
