We reviewed a personal series of 124 needle localization breast biopsies done in a 22-month period. Twenty percent of these eventuated into a diagnosis of cancer. When the indication for biopsy consisted of microcalcifications, the cancer incidence was 26%. It was 13% when a "soft tissue density" was the indication. On average, 1.16 biopsies were required to obtain the indicated sample. A 10-step technique to ensure successful and early needle localization is described in detail in the course of the video tape.
