Protection for surgeons and operating room teams against serious viral infections is the goal of this video. As emphasized, the universal precautions have not specifically addressed the operating room environment, and the specific issue of "sharps" is of critical importance during operative procedures. Furthermore, as recent surgical literature will attest, knowledge of the universal precautions by no means ensures compliance with them. It is hoped that this video will go a long way toward encouraging surgeons and their operating teams to implement universal precautions routinely, for all cases in the operating room.
