Colonoscopy plays an ever increasing role in the practice of general surgeons. This modality can be used preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively for diagnostic purposes. In addition, there are many situations where definitive therapy can be undertaken via the colonoscope. The surgeon needs to be aware of the indications for, as well as the limitations and complications of, colonoscopy.
