Laparoscopic assisted low anterior resection of the rectum can be performed safely and effectively for rectal cancer if all of the principles for a standard anatomic dissection of the rectum are followed. High ligation of feeding vessels, maintenance of an intact fascial envelope around the rectum, containment of bowel contents, full mobilization of the splenic flexure and wound protection during tissue extraction are all-essential to performing an adequate cancer operation.
