In this video, all embryological steps of the division of the primitive cloaca into the anorectum and urogenital region are documented with the use of a scanning electron microscope as a video camera. These SEM-sequences are completed by an animated sequence, in which the principles of the cloacal differentiation are summarized. In a last sequence, embryos with malformed cloacae are shown and the pathogenesis of the malformation is discussed.
