Fetuses with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia have a high postnatal mortality, principally due to pulmonary hypoplasia. A strategy has been developed in which the fetal trachea is temporarily occluded using minimally invasive techniqes. Obstruction of the normal egress of lung fluid produces lung growth and has lead to an increased survival in this subset of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
