This video depicts a bilateral lung volume reduction procedure performed through median sternotomy. Thirty to 40% of the volume of each lung, representing the most diseased portions, are re-moved with a linear stapling device. The staple lines are reinforced with strips of bovine pericardium to avoid tearing of the lung upon re-expansion.
