This videotape demonstrates the induction of chemical pleurodesis using talc in two patients with pleural effusions. The first patient is a 72 year old man with a pleural effusion secondary to malignant mesothelioma. Symptomatic relief was achieved with chemical pleurodesis. The second patient is an 82 year old woman with a recurrent nonspecific pleural effusion secondary to congestive heart failure. After complete, thorough inspection of the pleura and evacuation of a hemothorax from a previous closed pleural biopsy, talc pleurodesis was effected.
