Both to ensure a good long-term result and to avoid the necessity of long-term anticoagulant therapy and its attendant complications, the aortic root, including the aortic valve, was replaced by the patient's own pulmonary artery and pulmonary valve, replacing an aortic sinus aneurysm and an incompetent aortic valve. The patient's pulmonary artery root was replaced with a homograft. The angiograms prior to the operation showed a large aneurysm of the aortic root and moderate aortic incompetence. The angiogram performed after the operation showed good functioning of the pulmonary root autograft as well as the pulmonary homograft. The patient did well following the operation and to date continues to do well without taking anticoagulation therapy.
