This program identifies that the use of small caliber (8-10 mm) portocaval shunts "partially" lowers portal pressure and maintains moderate mesenteric venous hypertension. These shunts provide protection against variceal rebleeding and equivalent long-term patency rates as compared to the conventional portocaval shunts.
