Single port surgery has theorectical advantages in wound complications, cosmesis and post-operative pain over traditional multi-port laparoscopic techniques. However, with many current approaches to single site surgery, triangulation and ergonomics suffer at the potential detriment of the patient and surgeon. An ideal solution would combine the advantages of laparoscopic surgery through a single port access system.

The SPIDER (Single Port Incision Device, Extended Reach) was used on a bench-top model and to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a porcine model.

This video will depict single port cholecystectomy with the SPIDER system. Features of the system will also be highlighted. The Transenterix SPIDER system uses flexible articulating arms with structural strength. A robust retractor is included in the system that allows excellent exposure of the cystic structures. Instrument tips mimic traditional laparoscopic instruments and approach the operative field from angles that imitate or improve on standard laparoscopic trocars. Commercial laparoscopic clips can be used to securely ligate the cystic duct and artery. A standard laparoscope is utilized with the system.

The SPIDER system effectively combines the advantages of laparoscopy with a single port access system.
