Surgeons in the United States perform more than 750,000 cholecystectomies annually; the vast majority are done laparoscopically and usually on an elective basis. Most cases are straightforward; however, significant complications have been reported such as common bile duct injuries, bowel perforations and postoperative bleeding. Acute inflammatory changes encountered during emergency cholecystectomy more commonly lead to conversion to an open operation with its associated morbidity. This video explores strategies to minimize the risks of complication giving insight on managing the most challenging cholecystectomy cases.
