After completing this learner's guide and viewing the accompanying video, the perioperative registered nurse (RN) and other perioperative team members will have increased their understanding of the challenges related to the perioperative care of older adults. Team members can use this knowledge to assess, counsel, and empathize with their older surgical patients and improve patient care and satisfaction in the perioperative setting.

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize that a rapid increase in the older population is projected to occur in the near future
  • Preoperatively assess the older surgical patient
  • Anticipate, identify, and address hearing and vision impairment in older patients
  • Recognize the effect of social determinants on patient health and outcomes
  • Apply, adjust, or suspend advance directives during the perioperative period in accordance with patient goals and preferences
  • Recognize that older patients have concerns and priorities beyond the diagnosis and treatment of the physical condition or disease
