The purpose of this study guide and the accompanying video is to provide guidance for the care of a patient receiving moderate sedation and analgesia provided by a registered nurse (RN). This learning activity will focus on determining the scope of nursing practice related to moderate sedation, patient selection criteria, assessment of the patient before and during moderate sedation, monitoring, administration of medications, and discharge criteria.

After completing this study guide and viewing the accompanying video, the perioperative RN should be able to:

  • Verify that administration of medications for moderate sedation falls within the nurse's scope of practice
  • Perform a pre-sedation nursing risk assessment of the patient, including overall health, obstructive sleep apnea, and potential airway and ventilation issues
  • Monitor and document the patient's status throughout the perioperative period
  • Administer medications to achieve moderate sedation and analgesia
  • Apply appropriate discharge criteria
