The purpose of this study guide and accompanying video is to educate perioperative registered nurses (RNs) and other interested health care personnel about the safe management of surgical specimens.
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the general requirements for the collection, labeling, handling, and transportation of surgical specimens to preserve the integrity of the specimen
- List the special requirements for the collection and preparation of breast biopsy specimens
- Explain the concept of chain of custody for forensic evidence and its application in the perioperative setting
- Describe actions to decrease the occurrence of surgical specimen errors
