Performance Improvement (PI) activities describe structured, long-term processes by which a physician or group of physicians can learn about specific performance measures, retrospectively assess their practice, apply performance improvement measures prospectively over a useful interval, and reevaluate their performance.
As a provider of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, Ciné-Med's CME Department is committed to offering PI CME activities to support health care providers in making appropriate changes to their practice.
Currently, Ciné-Med designates specified activities as CME-credit eligible towards Performance Improvement. In addition to attending a live activity and receiving credit for attendance, physicians may earn up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
Completing a self-directed Performance Improvement activity will require the following:
Assess current practice using identified performance measures, either through chart reviews or some other appropriate mechanism.
Step 1: Select and register for a live CME activity that has been designated eligible for CME credit toward Performance Improvement. These activities are denoted with a *PI.
Step 2: Download and complete the forms for Stage A.
Step 3: Review the charts of 5 patients who meet the criteria for the specific performance measure listed for the live CME you selected and complete Data Collection Forms for each chart.
Step 4: Submit the forms to Ciné-Med CME for documentation. Keep a copy for your records.
Step 5: Attend the designated live CME activity. Upon attending the program and completing & submitting the course evaluation form, you will be awarded the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for the activity.
Implement an intervention based upon performance measure(s) selected in Stage A, using suitable tracking tools (e.g. reminders or flow sheets).
Step 1: Based on the information presented at the live CME activity you attended, and by reviewing the data you entered on the Data Collection Forms in Stage A, reflect on your current practice pattern and how it compares with the standards of practice presented at the educational conference.
Step 2: Create and implement an intervention that will enable you to more consistently implement the optimal standard of practice specific to the performance measure selected in Stage A. Identify any barriers in the system and consider ways to overcome these barriers. The intervention may take the form of reminder systems and other downloadable materials or changes in SOPs or other system-based interventions.
Step 3: Download and complete the forms for Stage B
Step 4: Submit the completed forms to Ciné-Med CME for documentation. Keep a copy for your records.
Re-evaluate and reflect on performance in practice Stage B by comparing to the assessment done in Stage A. Summarize any practice and/or outcome changes that resulted from conducting the PI project.
Step 1: Download 5 additional Data Collection Forms.
Step 2: Conduct a second set of chart reviews to assess the effectiveness of your intervention and complete the Data Collection Forms.
Step 3: Write a short narrative describing your assessment of the success of the intervention(s) you chose and any other reflections on why or why not the intervention(s) had an impact on patient care.
Step 4: Download and complete the Stage C Credit Form.
Step 5: Submit the Data Collection Forms, your narrative and the completed and signed Stage C Credit Form to Ciné-Med CME. Keep a copy for your records.
Upon acceptable completion of all 3 stages, you will be awarded an additional 5 credits for a total of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. (The credits awarded for attending a designated CME activity are in addition to the 20 credits for the PI activity).
