The abdominal-right thoracic approach is used to resect a carcinoma of cardia extending to involve the abdominal esophagus. The main features are: Limited abdominal lymphadenectomy; a right thoracotomy to allow easy access to resect an adequate length of esophagus; a hand-sewn esophagogastric anastomosis; and, portable suction catheter for drainage.
