Workplace Safety for the Perioperative Nurse
Even the best health care environment poses occupational hazards that create a risk for personal injury. A top priority for every health care organization should be to create a safe and secure workplace. An unsafe work environment can lead to serious injuries or health problems that can take a significant toll on the health care providers who work there. Registered nurses have many work-related concerns but the top four health and safety concerns include the chronic effects of stress related to overwork, the fear of developing a severe back injury, the possibility of contracting a potentially deadly disease and concerns of being assaulted.
Any health care organization that is concerned with patient safety needs to be concerned with staff member safety. Two specific safety issues that affect both health care providers and patients are physical injuries and fire safety. Health care organizations need to be committed to building a culture of safety by implementing the practices that promote health, safety and security in the workplace.
