This video provides an overview of the physiologic effects of aging, describe mental status and psychosocial assessments of elderly surgical patients and plan and evaluate health instruction for these patients and their family members. The video will also promote perioperative nurses' competence in caring for elderly patients who undergo surgical procedures.

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe physiologic changes in all body systems that are associated with aging
  • Discuss the impact of these physiologic changes in care modification for the older adult
  • Provide a supportive environment which minimizes the risk of delirium
  • Discuss the physiologic basis of possible complications and appropriate interventions
